Abingdon Winery is a Blue Ridge Mountain
Virginia Winery that began in 1997 with just
over ten acres of growing land. Abingdon Winery
owners, Janet and Bob, moved to Virginia from
Florida when they both retired from AT&T
as executives in the research and
development department. After enjoying a long
career with AT&T, the couple formally retired
and then managed and owned a charming motel in
Florida. Upon selling the motel, the couple felt
discontent with the retirement lifestyle and
searched for a passion they could follow. After
discovering the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of
Virginia, the couple moved to the area and
studied viticulture and enology and started
Abingdon Winery and Vineyards. The first fruits
were planted in 1998 and since then, this
Virginia Vineyard has expanded to include
over 53 acres of land and more than 6000 plants.
Using only premium fruits, Abingdon Winery’s
main grape varieties are Cabernet Franc,
Riesling, Chardonel, Traminette, Pino Noir,
Norton, Chambourcin, and Viognier.
Premier among Virginia Vineyards, Abingdon
Winery opened a tasting
room in 2001 and has since offered tasting and
winery tours to the public from
March 15 through December 15. This year, the dates have
changed slightly. Abingdon Winery is open in
2008 from March 14 to December 14, Tuesday
through Saturday from 10am
to 6pm and Sunday from 12pm to 6pm. The tasting
room and gift shop feature a gorgeous display
window overlooking the South Holston River
and a small creek running through the
property, making Abingdon perfect for small
gatherings. Large group parties of 15 or more
can tour the vineyards; please call for
reservations.
The winery is settled in a great area of
Washington County, just two miles from the South
Holson Lake and less than a half a mile from
some of the very best
Virginia Creeper Trails.
